 Everywhere else it's just Tuesday

Mardi Gras Day is a very special time of the Carnival Season! While Carnival season starts on January 6th (or the 12th night) Mardi Gras is actually just the day Before Ash Wednesday. The French translation for Fat Tuesday is MARDI GRAS. The phrase Mardi Gras means "Farewell to flesh"

Most of the celebrating takes place the last 2 weeks before Fat Tuesday, Parades start then and the Mardi Gras Krewes get everything rolling.  Although there are plenty of Carnival activities that start on January 6th. One of the first things celebrated is the KingCake. The Kingcake dates back thousands of years, it commemorates the Christ Childs birth. Hence the 12 days of Christmas (count from Christmas day to January 6th, or the 12th night). Anyway, KingCake are one of the first things that appear to ring in the Carnival Season

Some other activities that occur during the season are Balls and parties to get everyone in the mood! Then about 2 weeks prior to Fat Tuesday the parades start to roll throughout the New Orleans area. Each parading organization usually has a ball or party , most of with are off limits to non-members. But, there are several things for You to do. First you should take in some of the parades. This is like Christmas, the crowds are showered by beads and trinkets thrown from the ornate floats. Watching a parade with good friends has to be one of the highlights of Carnival. Also during this time, the French Quarter starts to come more alive than ever!

In the French Quarter there is no telling what you will see. The beads flow from the Bourbon Street balconies like beer from the tap! Speaking of beer, there is a beer stand in every nook and cranny just waiting for consumption. The night life on Bourbon can get pretty wild, the closer Fat Tuesday gets the wilder, and more crowded it becomes. The debauchery that goes on here may not be your style so if you are offended easily you may want to hit the Quarter during the day.

One the actual day of Mardi Gras everything is at it's wildest! The parades, bead tossing, flashing, eating, drinking , EVERYTHING IS BETTER! The revelry is at a fever pitched pace, you must party to the fullest and enjoy the day. For when the clock strikes midnight, that beckons in Ash Wednesday and that marks the official end to the Carnival season. Most people are exhausted by then and are glad that Fat Tuesday comes but once a year. This is the day that we have waited for since January 6th, and the excitement that fills the air can only happen on this day! so, If you make it to Carnival this year and experience Fat Tuesday you will then understand why "Every where else it is just a Tuesday"

Food was another Great thing about Mardi Gras. Most people can't get this type of food in their hometown , so this is a eaters paradise. There are many good spots to fill that tummy, but In my experiences stay off Bourbon street for a "good" meal, that is unless you are really drunk and need a quick fix.
On Bourbon Street I do usually get a roast beef po-boy from the Court of two sisters tavern, and of course a lucky dog!!!!! Other good restaurants in the Quarter I have tried are: NOLA, Jonny's po-boys, Bacco, and the gumbo shop
just to name a few, so be ready to fill that belly up when ya come down!!

Mardi Gras is a tradition that has been celebrated for over 300 years in America. The Carnival season starts on January 6th, or the feast of the Epiphany. On that day the traditional King Cake is consumed. The King Cake has a Plastic baby inside to represent the Christ child. Whomever finds the baby is declared king for the day and has to make or buy  the next King Cake. I always start the Mardi Gras season with a King Cake from Haydel's Bakery ( For several years the bakery has been including a  p-kingcake.gif (30421 bytes)handcrafted porcelain Mardi Gras Collectable figure). After my first King Cake I then start to bake my own from. I will bake anywhere from 15 to 20 King Cakes myself, once people eat a home baked King Cake they will want you to make more and more for parties.

It's all about the beads

To a first time Mardi Gras reveler they may think, " what's the deal with the beads?" Well here is my take on the situation.

Beads are the currency of carnival! Without them you are broke in the French Quarter. See, in New Orleans during Carnival Cheap Plastic beads can change your life in many ways. First off, Without beads you will be "left out" of all the fun in the Quarter. Beads during Mardi Gras will get you almost anything that you want. They have power over people.beads.bmp (921654 bytes)

I have seen Women and men fight over beads. I have seen acts that would get you arrested in any other city, just for purple, green, and gold beads. I have met many good friends all because of beads. Well, I have even been moved up in a restaurant line because I had a certain set of beads that the server wanted.

Beads are thrown from floats, traded for flashes, tossed about just for the fun of seeing a smile brought to a child's face. They come in all shapes and sizes, colors and lengths. They even have beads that light up and Blink! There really is something magical about Mardi Gras beads! I can't hardly wait to get my first order of beads in. My eyes light up like a kid in a candy store! I inspect them and admire them, and I can never get enough of them! I spend hundreds of dollars on beads just to trade them or give them away, that is what Mardi Gras is all about!

So if you want to be rich this Mardi Gras Season, do yourself a favor and get yourself some nice, shiny beads. Remember that anywhere else in the Country they are just cheap, plastic beads, But in New Orleans they are priceless jewels!

But, the most joyful thing about beads is the excitement that is created when you are tossing them out into the crowd, or when a woman comes up and says "what will it take to get those beads". Also, some of the best beads for Mardi Gras 2001 will be pepper beads, fish beads and flashing beads will continue to be popular (but I see them losing their trading ability to less nudity flashes). Also, Watch out though for the rare Krewe of Elvis medallion beads and the KOE donut beads.

This is what Mardi Gras is like. The more you Drink the more
it becomes like  this, Your eyes and mind start playing tricks

On you. The only way that it gets better is when Ash Wednesday comes around. All the looking at the crazy people and the mad rush to catch a few beads, lack of sleep and a hurricane or two
doesn't help either. On the other hand this can be a good thing. After all that's what Mardi Gras is
about. It is the time when anything and everything goes. It's the time to revel before you repent for your sinning from
The wild weekend that you spent out on Bourbon Street. So be safe and responsible, and respect Other peoples rights. No one has fun when others are causing trouble. Remember this!!!!!  One more thing if you completed Reading this , you may have just had a small taste of Carnival without the hangover ;-)
